Avian influenza (H9N2) vaccines
Avian influenza (bird flu) is caused by influenza A viruses. Low-pathogenic H9N2 causes respiratory disease and production losses, and vaccination against it is permitted in India under DAHD policy using approved inactivated H9N2 vaccines. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) is a notifiable disease controlled by the government through detection and culling; preventive H5 vaccination is not permitted in India.
Signs to watch for
- Respiratory signs: coughing, sneezing, swollen sinuses (H9N2)
- Drop in feed intake and egg production
- Higher mortality when combined with other infections
- HPAI: sudden very high mortality, swollen blue combs and wattles — report immediately
Which birds are at risk?
Commercial layers, breeders and broilers, especially in areas with H9N2 circulation.
How vaccination protects your flock
Approved inactivated, oil-adjuvanted H9N2 vaccines are injected according to the manufacturer's schedule and veterinary advice. Strong biosecurity — keeping wild birds out and controlling visitors — remains essential for every type of bird flu. Suspected HPAI must be reported to the Animal Husbandry department.

Avian Influenza H9N2 (LPAI): common questions
Is bird flu vaccination allowed in India?
Vaccination against low-pathogenic H9N2 avian influenza is allowed with approved vaccines. Preventive vaccination against highly pathogenic H5N1 is not permitted; outbreaks are handled by the government's detect-and-cull policy.
What should I do if I suspect bird flu?
Stop all movement of birds and eggs, keep visitors out, and report immediately to your veterinarian and the local Animal Husbandry department.
Does H9N2 vaccination protect against H5N1?
No. H9N2 vaccines protect against H9N2 only. Biosecurity is the main defence against H5N1.
